training a puppy

A timid pup is truly a problem child, but his problems are at the opposite end of the spectrum from his pack-leader littermate. This puppy seems to react in fear to almost everything - littermates that play too rough, loud noises, strange people, etc. This little guy needs a slight different set of puppy training tips. People who are not aware of what the situation really is are apt to assume that the puppy has been abused, when that is not the case at all.

I can remember one occasion in particular in which I had a shy puppy born to a litter in which all the other puppies had absolutely delightful temperaments. He evidenced this behavior right from the time his eyes first opened and he began walking around the whelping box. His treatment and experiences were no different than those of the other puppies. Try as I might, I was never really able to conquer the puppy’s unfounded fears.

Fortunately, I was able to come across kind and sympathetic owners for the pup. They were mature people with no children who understood the temperament difficulties and yet were happy to provide a home for him. They had experience with training puppies and so the puppy was placed with the family under the provision that, in the event a problem arose that the new owner was not able to cope with, the puppy would be returned to us. In this particular case, however, the puppy grew to adulthood as a quiet, devoted pet While he did improve in his shyness, new situations, strange people, or sudden loud noises were a problem throughout his entire life.

Puppy Temperaments

There are a few puppy training tips or techniques that can tell you a great deal about an individual puppy as well. Cradling a puppy in your arms and holding him on his back can tell you how willing the youngster is to comply with what you want him to do. Checking ears and feet can bring a number of different reactions. Some pups will easily comply; others will offer mild resistance.

The puppy to avoid is the one that becomes terrified at the occurrence of something strange or the one that snaps at being intruded upon. No puppy should be anything less than happy, friendly, and reasonably able to cope with your little experiments.

There are more formal tests that behaviorists can give puppies that can reveal significant details in regard to their potential temperament as adults. These tests begin as early as three weeks and continue on up to three months.

Frank and Sally are two German Shepherds that have matured in a pleasant suburban home together. The owner, Ms. Vicky, has no objection about the behaviors of the two dogs, with the exception of the fact that they whine incessantly. Seeing as her prince and princess do not have any aggressive tendencies, are not territorial, and do not have any other bad habits, she has overlooked this dog whining issue for years. But, years have passed and the whining progressed into impatiently annoying and Ms. Vicky started to think why the two frequently whine.

In an effort to stop this behavior, she used her time to find the root of the problem. Dogs whine for a lot of reasons, including pain, fear, or boredom. In this instance, she thought that the cause of the whining was probably boredom, but she also felt that the other reasons should not be completely ruled out and so she decided to seek for the expert’s opinion. Toby and Josie’s owner brought the pair to the vet’s office to get more information regarding the the situation. The veterinarian believed that the whining behavior stemmed from Toby and Josie being left alone for a large portion of the day while Ms. Vicky was at work. Although Toby and Josie were placed outdoors, so they can play, do their business, and exercise at will, the pair was still lonely. Given that this behavior has never been checked, the dogs have acquired the habit as a sympathy ploy to get what they want. Ms. Vicky confirmed this idea and the next step of breaking the habit started.

First of all , Toby and Josie were noticeably not okay with their current condition of being left alone during the morning. To make her dearly loved prince and princess happier, Vicky hired a pet sitter who comes in twice a day to walk, pet, and play with Toby and Josie. Despite the fact that the whining was still present, they’ve observed that the two dogs seem to be much happier when their owner returns from work. If Ms. Vicky didn’t allowed this whining problem to continue for such a long period of time and corrected the problem sooner, this new arrangement would have likely ended the whining altogether.

Meanwhile, the owner has started implementing the new training command for Toby and Josie. Each time either dog whines, she firmly states “no whine”. She gives this command with a quick squirt of water from a spray bottle to get the dog’s attention. Once the dog stops whining, the Miss lavishes it with praises and treats. Once the dog stops whining, the Miss lavishes it with praises and treats. Certainly, activities like going outside cannot be punished , since many dogs whine when they need to take a poo.

This training technique accompanied with hiring of a pet sitter has dramatically changed the whining situation with Toby and Josie. Now, neither dog whines to get what they want! Furthermore, Miss Vicky finds the situation a great deal less stressful on both her and the dogs. If you too are experiencing a similar situation, consider following this case study to help break your dogs from whining. Always remember that pain or discomfort is a possible reason for whining, so regularly visit your vet to ensure your dog is always in good condition. Best of Luck! Cheers!

Housebreaking a dog is more than just getting the dog to relieve himself in the right place and at the right time. It includes this, but it also involves his entire behavior in the house. He must learn things like what rooms he is allowed to enter and what places he is not allowed to lie on.

A new dog can wear out his welcome fast when the owner finds out he urinated on the carpet. (A more exhaustive list of dog behavior problems is available in How I Trained My Dog in One Evening.) Of course, if he is a young pup, he can’t help it. If he has go to, he goes. It’s natural. Therefore, the training process must begin as soon as possible.

If you got your pup when he was eight weeks old, you got him at the ideal time. But remember, the dog usually can’t control the urinating muscles until he is about twelve weeks old. This underlines how important it is to take your dog outside often during the first days of ownership. Especially get him out a short time after a meal. Every hour would be good for the first few days at least. When he goes in the proper place, reward him with voice and treats.

When the pup goes in the right place (outside or in a designated box indoors), be sure to praise him profusely. You might even give him a favorite dog biscuit. This assures the pet that he is pleasing you. So, often opportunities and much praise will reinforce his acceptable behavior.

There may be places in the house you don’t want the dog to go. A black shedding dog may not be welcome on the white couch, for example! The untrained pup may not be welcome in the carpeted rooms. Your pet must understand these places are off limits.

This kind of training, say the best books on dog training, requires consistency and patience. So, if the dog goes into the forbidden area, then instruct him with words and force him out of the room or off of the furniture. Do this every time he trespasses so that he knows this is never allowed. If you make exceptions, it will only confuse him.

If you suspect your dog is trespassing when you are not watching, but not when you are, then it is obvious he likes the place but knows it is wrong. One family made it clear their dog was not to get on the living room furniture. But when they came home and felt the warm spot on the softest chair, the dog was caught. Try tricking the dog into thinking you are not watching when really you are. Then when you catch him disobeying the rule, rap his bottom with a paper and scold him so that he gets the message this is never allowed, watched or not.

Dogs generally like to please their masters. Therefore, when the dog follows the rules without being told, words of praise should be poured on. Let him know he has done very well to control his urge to do what feels good but is disobedient. If you give in, or give up, then remember the dog won and has really trained you.

Who’s Dove Cresswell?

As a Hollywood North dog trainer, Dove Cresswell has trained dogs for TV, film and commercials.

At 25 years of age, she has already been training various dog breeds for over 10 years. She has also trained other animals including cougars, large reptiles, rodents, birds, and deer.

Dove is accustomed to having to train animals for movies very quickly. Equally fast results can be expected from her audio/video dog training course.

Click here to take a look at this excellent dog training course: Dove Cresswell.

What is Included?

The online dog training course, which is audio and video format, offers the following 7 lessons:

  • Puppy Potty Training/Housetraining
  • Dog Obedience Training
  • Crate Training
  • Walking Politely on a Leash: The Informal Heel
  • The Recall
  • Good Puppy & Dog Manners
  • Special Dog Tricks

Useful advice for both large and small dog breeds is included in the puppy house training section.

What I Especially Liked

The sections are fun and waste no time in getting to the point. Well-illustrated slides and clear narration made the dog training techniques easy to understand. Being able to hear voice tones and see the correct stances for both dog and owner is a definite advantage of using this audio/video format. This part of the online dog training course is better than an ebook.

Although this program is not as comprehensive as some of the dog behavior modification ebooks in areas such as dog behavior problems and specific dog breed information, it is full of informative and well-presented dog obedience and housetraining guidance for dog owners.

Dove presents a very interesting and common-sense perspective on paper training. Dove is of the opinion that paper training is confusing for dogs and should not be used. Training puppies to always “go potty” outside is explained in a highly informative and easy to follow way.

Free Bonuses

You will be able to e-mail Dove with your own dog behavior issues once you have purchased the course:

  • Teach your dog to fetch
  • Train your dog to play soccer
  • Train your dog to play hide ‘n seek
  • Information on dog sports
  • Choosing the right toys for your dog
  • Earning your dog’s respect
  • Choosing the right dog food and treats

My Final Thoughts

At first, I was quite taken aback that only seven lessons were offered in this first rate program; once I actually listened to the lessons and realized just how much information was offered in the course, I quickly changed my opinion. I found this multimedia online dog training program most enjoyable; so much so that I wished it would have been longer. The easily understood lessons allow you replacate the techniques and successfully train your dog like a pro.

The only downside with this course is that it’s only accessible online so you need an internet connection to be able to view it.  Because of this, I have given it a rating of 4 1/2 stars. If the course was also offered as an e-book, I would have gladly given it 5 stars.

This course would be ideal for all dog owners wanting a top notch dog training guide, however, I feel that it is particularly appealing to people who find ebooks boring.  So you know what your getting in advance, you are allowed to take a look at a sample lesson prior to buying the course.

I strongly recommend that you take a look at Dove Cresswell’s outstanding course for all your dog training needs: Dove Cresswell’s Puppy & Dog Training Online.

Whining is instinctive for puppies when they are hungry, tired or cold. Mother dogs provide a safe place to sleep, warmth and milk to their puppies when they whine.

Eventually, puppies connect the two actions and begin to whine deliberately. This tells the mother that her puppy wants something or there is a problem.

Puppies should be adopted between 8-10 weeks of age. This is when puppies learn that whining doesn’t have any affect with their new family; or they may use whining to compel their new mom (you!) into giving them what they want.

It is for this reason that the general opinion is that a new puppy should be left alone on his first night in your home. If you respond to puppy whining with warmth, petting, cuddling, your dog is sure to think that whining will get him what he wants.

For a fantastic course to stop your pup from whining, I recommend that you check out: Puppy Whining.

Of course, this will require good judgment and common sense on your part. A nervous puppy will need affection, reassurance and attention. It is important that you act quickly so he doesn’t think that the desired result was achieved through his puppy whining. Your puppy should not get used to whining whenever he wants something.

To accustom your puppy to being left on his own, you should leave him alone even when you are in the house. This will help to prevent separation anxiety when you leave the home. Once you know that all your puppy’s physical needs have been met and you have taken the time to accustom him to isolation, then you must teach him that whining is unacceptable.

Of course, puppies that are very upset, crying, and whining should not be heartlessly ignored. You should show him some love and help him to relax once the whining has stopped. Some puppies whine for an extended period of time so it is not always feasible to wait until they have stopped whining.

If this is the situation, you don’t have to let your puppy’s suffering drag on - open the door of the crate as soon as he stops whining, even if it’s just for a matter of seconds. This is less than ideal but is probably the best you’ll be able to do under the circumstances.

By 6 months of age, most dogs will have outgrown puppy whining. If the whining continues after this period, the puppy is doing it by nature, or has discovered that this gets him what he wants.

You don’t need to be concerned if a puppy bites you. This behavior is normal for puppies. Chewing, biting and nibbling help puppies through the painful teething period. As well, this teaches puppies about eating and chewing skills. Biting and chewing are viewed by puppies as play.

Puppies are naturally inclined to bite, however it is possible for you to stop puppy biting. As his master, you are responsible for teaching him about good and bad behaviors with regard to his biting problems.

Puppies are usually adorable and cuddly and they don’t mean to injure anyone with their sharp little teeth. In their thinking, they are being playful and showing love. Even so, there will always be a few puppies that continue to bite.

For a comprehensive guide to help you with your puppy behavior problems, I recommend that you check out: Stop Puppy Biting.

While puppies are still young, they must be discouraged from biting. Puppy biting should be stopped by 4 months of age or earlier.Puppies that remain with their mother learn to stop biting from her. All too often, puppies are taken away from their mothers before they have an opportunity to learn to stop biting from her.

One of the best ways to stop puppy biting is to integrate them  with other puppies and dogs. It is probable that the company of other dogs will help your puppy to understand the lessons that his mother would have taught him. It is completely normal for puppies to nip and bite while they are playing. Your puppy will understand very quickly that being bitten by other dogs while playing is not a good thing. Just this fact will eventually stop puppy biting.  This is a lesson that you can’t teach your puppy. It can only be taught through socialization with other dogs and puppies.

Your dog will learn not to fear other dogs if he is allowed to socialize with them. When puppies are with other dogs, they are free to be energetic and playful. It is also an ideal way for a puppy to burn up excess energy so you will be able to take home a calmer dog. A puppy that is given lots of time to play with other dogs will be less likely to bite or nibble you or your family members.

Puppy biting can become a problem if puppies or dogs are not socialized with other dogs. Dogs bite for two key reasons: to show aggression and make people move back from them or out of fear. A dog that is not used to being around other dogs is more likely to bite. However, if your dog is socialized at a young age, you will gradually be able to stop puppy biting problems.

It is also important to make sure that there is trust and respect in your relationship with your puppy. Your puppy should not be shouted at when you discipline him. You should never slap, kick or hit your puppy. A calm and assertive voice should be used along with consistency with discipline and treats. Constantly give your dog lots of affection. A puppy that knows he is loved will quickly learn to stop puppy biting.

There are a number reasons for dog barking. Dogs may bark to warn you that a stranger is approaching or an intruder is breaking into your home. Other causes of dog barking are pain and fear. A dog may bark to intimidate you or your family members, or as a way to get your attention.

For a really great dog training guide to stop dogs from barking, see: How to Stop Dogs Barking

Whatever the reason, we all agree that it can be very aggravating and seek ways to stop dogs barking. Some owners of dogs that constantly bark are reported for disturbing the peace. I’m happy to report that there are several ways to stop your dog from barking without a reason.

The best way to stop dogs barking is to train your dog when it is appropriate for him to bark. A number of options are available, the best being the reward/reprimand technique. This technique is successful and humane.

As an alternative to this method of training, some dog owners choose to use an electronic collar, also known as a bark collar. The dog wears the collar, which is activated when the dog barks. When the bark collar gives off a small electronic shock, the dog is taken by surprise. Once dogs begin to associate pain with their barking, they will stop barking. In my opinion, bark collars are a cruel way of training dogs to stop barking.

Not all dogs realize that the uncomfortable shock is directly related to their barking; electronic collars should not be used for this reason and many others. They become accustomed to the electronic shocks and keep on barking. In order for the collar to be effective, the prongs must touch the skin which may not happen if a dog has a thick coat. As well, there are few examples where simply using an electronic collar will stop dog barking. The inclusion of obedience training will usually provide optimal results.

There are some people who believe that electronic bark collars can be discouraging to dogs. This is the reason why some people opt for citronella collars, which use a similar principle to electronic collars. Citronella collars produce a mist when dogs bark. The majority of dogs do not like the odor. Once your dog understands that the foul smell is emitted when he barks, he will stop barking to avoid the smell. They are as effective as electronic collars.

Just a reminder, if you’re looking for a great free site that will help you with your dog behavior problems, check out:  How to Stop Dogs Barking

If used correctly, electronic collars can be useful training tools, however most vets and dog trainers agree that they are no replacement for quality dog obedience training. Also, obedience training for dogs does much more than just stop dogs from barking. It also helps with other dog behavior issues.

Surgery is the most drastic and, in my opinion, barbaric option to stop dogs barking. In order to stop dogs from barking, a portion of the larynx is removed. It is not unheard of for the dog’s bark to return, voiding the surgery. Fortunately, the surgical approach to stop dogs barking is opposed by most vets.

In closing, I hope we have managed to convince you that the most effective way to stop dogs barking is with good quality obedience training. You should understand that if you use an electronic collar to stop your dog from barking, he will not let you know when a burglar is in the house. A dog that has been given good obedience training will understand the appropriate times to bark and will also defend your family.

I hope this article was helpful to you. I also have a review of a great dog training product that you should check out here: Dove Cresswell’s Puppy Training & Dog Training Online

Dogs are instinctively aggressive and we all know that dogs are able to seriously injure humans and other animals. Fortunately, there are ways for dog owners to stop aggression in their dog. An aggressive dog must be given obedience training immediately, before someone is injured.

For a really great dog training guide, I strongly suggest that you check out: Training Aggressive Dogs.

Aggression towards family members and towards strangers are the most frequent behaviors displayed by aggressive dogs. Aggressive dog behavior can be triggered for many different reasons so it should be reacted to in different ways.

Aggression Towards Strangers

Dogs will often dislike unfamiliar people and other animals until they have an opportunity to get used to being around them. The process for getting your dog used to unfamiliar people, animals, and surroundings is called socialization. Socialization is vital to training your dog. So how will socialization stop an aggressive dog from attacking people who make deliveries to your house?. A socialized dog begins to understand that new experiences can be fun instead of frightening.

It is important that your dog learns this at a young age. If your dog is frequently amongst various kinds of people (such as children, teenagers, men wearing uniforms, old people, people wearing helmets or carrying umbrellas) in a relaxed and fun environment, the chances of your dog being being aggressive towards strangers are much less.

Just a reminder, if you are looking for a great free site to help you solve your dog’s aggressive behavior, you should check out: Training Aggressive Dogs.

If you are seeking a good spot for socializing your pet, group training sessions, often held by large pet stores or at a veterinary office, are a good idea. Your dog will learn how to behave with dogs he doesn’t know. These sessions will also make your dog realize that he does not need to fear people he doesn’t know. He should not feel overwhelmed at these sessions - allow his tolerance to build gradually by starting off slowly.

Aggressive Dog Behavior Towards Family Members

Dog aggression towards human family members is most commonly for these reasons:

  • Your dog is guarding his food and toys from his owner or family members. Resource guarding is quite usual behavior for dogs.
  • Dogs being pack animals show dominant behavior according to where they see themselves ranked in the pecking order of the household. To your dog, your family structure is no different from that of a dog pack. Dogs that perceive their ranking in the hierarchy to be higher than their owner or family members are likely to show aggressive behavior.

Such resource guarding is typical of dominant behavior, as an underdog would not show aggression to a more highly ranked member of the pack.

The best way to prevent dog aggression is to provide consistent dog obedience training, which will make it clear to your dog that you are the “alpha dog”. Your “alpha dog” status can be strengthened with rewards such as treats and praise when he reacts appropriately to a command, and with “time-out” for misbehaving.

Here is a potty training dog article.

When you bring a new dog or puppy into the home, the first thing you will generally have to worry about is how to potty train a dog. While some people luck out and get their dogs from breeders who took the time to potty train their dogs, this is not always the case. In fact, most of the time the new owners are going to be the people responsible for the training. This can be a scary thought for a lot of people but training a dog is a lot easier then it seems.

If you are strict with the training one day and then relax a little with it the next day, it will take you a long time to see your desired results. Training a dog can be fun and exciting if you have the right mindset

If you decide that you would like to train your dog to use a pee pad, you will need to find a consistent location for the pad. If the dog is unable to find the pad, they will become unsure of what to do. You must create an environment where the dog knows exactly what is expecting of them. When the dog knows what the expected behavior is, there will be fewer accidents. If your dog has chosen another location for its restroom, you will have more work to train the dog. You must be willing to work with your dogs current behavior to properly train them.

Decide where you want your puppy potty train indoors. Put the pee pad down and show him where it is. Most dogs will try to please you by using the pad. If they decide that there is somewhere else in the house, like under the table, then you have found your training start place. Put the pad down, show him where it is, and then gradually move it to where you want him to use it on a regular basis.

Learn more about how to Potty Train Dog here.

No matter whether indoor or out, when you potty train a dog you should be careful to only give food and water during set meal times, so that there are less accidents. For outdoor training, wait about twenty minutes after eating, then put the leash on and take your dog outside, but do not let it just wander around as it pleases. Instead, lead it directly to a designated spot, and when your dog does what it’s expected to, give lots of acknowledgment along with a treat.

A plan of action is required when the individual is away from home. His/Her dog may not know how to relieve itself if not trained for the pee pads, similar to other trained dogs. Training a dog to go to the bathroom outside requires teaching it to hold its bladder, hence crate training is useful. If the dog is kept in a safe crate while the person is sleeping or is not at home, it may not go to the bathroom. It is very important that when he/she returns home, the dog has to be taken out immediately.
